LEICESTERSHIRE AND RUTLAND CROSS COUNTRY SELECTION POLICY

The purpose of the below selection policy is to select a team to represent Leicestershire and Rutland at the English Schools Cross Country Championship. All qualifying athletes must be registered students at a recognised School or college that is registered as such with Leicestershire and Rutland County Councils.

Age groups for the championship selection are defined based on a student's age on 31st August of the school year in which the competition is held as follows

Group (Boys, Girls)	Age at 31 August	School Year
Junior (JB, JG)	13–14	8–9
Intermediate (IB, IG)	15–16	10–11
Senior (SB, SG)	17–18	12–13

• The team to represent the county at the English Schools Championships will be selected from the County Championships results, held on the 3rd February 2024 at Ratcliffe College - All athletes must attend this race to be considered for selection.

• In the junior (years 8 & 9), intermediate (years 10 and 11), and senior age groups (year 12 &13) eight places are available for selection. Four athletes will also be selected as non-travelling reserves.

• The first five finishers at Ratcliffe County Championships race will gain automatic qualification. The remaining three places will be allocated by the Cross country team manager in conference with the management committee. Athletes will be selected with consideration of current form from relevant races this season and will include consideration of the Cross Country League (Mallory). ALL ATHLETES MUST COMPETE AT RATCLIFFE IN THE COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS (only very exceptional circumstance will be considered for missing this race).

• Athletes who are unable to compete in the race due to very exceptional circumstances (e.g. injury/illness), who believe they should be considered for selection for the English Schools’, must send a written explanation to Sarah Hatherley on or before Sunday 4th February 2024. Their explanation will then be considered. Allowances will only be made in very exceptional circumstances and where this deadline has been met.
